Amazon smart thermostat display

The thermostat’s face features a color LED screen, which displays the current temperature as well as the mode (heating or cooling, fan, auto) The thermostat also features an ECO indicator, which lights up when the heating temperature drops below 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

A notification icon lights up and an alert icon blinks when there is a message. The power button is located at the bottom of your screen.

The thermostat does not have a proximity sensor that lights up the screen when you approach it, like the Nest model. It stays dimly lit until you change the setting using onboard, app or Alexa controls.

Alexa smart thermostat features

Amazon’s thermostat is lacking some features that are included in some other smart thermostats. These include remote room sensors, dual-band Wi-Fi, support for HomeKit and IFTTT, and Google Assistant.

The Amazon smart thermostat also doubles as a smart speaker. You can still control the Amazon Smart Thermostat using Alexa voice commands, routines, and hunches if you have an Echo speaker or other Alexa device.

The thermostat can be adjusted with your voice but not turned on or off. You will need to use the app and the onboard controls.

Amazon smart thermostats app

Once you have installed the thermostat (described next), it can be found in the Alexa app. It is available for Android and iOS by going to Devices and tapping on the Thermostats panel.

After you have done that, you will see a screen with the temperature dial, current humidity level, current room temperature, current temperature setting, as well as the system mode.

To adjust the temperature set point on the Amazon smart thermostat, use the dial and tap on the mode button. You can also switch between heating and cooling modes and turn the thermostat off or on.

How to use the Alexa app with the smart thermostat

Tap the gear icon in the upper right corner to manage thermostat settings. You can adjust the Wi-Fi or furnace settings, configure the device with hunches that will alter the set point when Alexa thinks it’s asleep or away; set heating and cooling schedules; view energy usage reports; and set notifications.

The app will calculate your monthly energy bill by entering information about your home and past cooling and heating costs. Tap the More button at bottom of Devices screen to set up routines that allow the thermostat and other Alexa devices to communicate.

Alexa Hunches feature

Hunches, which are part Amazon’s wider Alexa smart-home platform, are AI-driven decisions that use data collected from your Alexa smart house to determine what temperature to set. Unsurprisingly, this means that the more Echo smart speakers you have, the better it will work. Amazon claims that Hunches uses other smart home devices such as lights, locks, sensors, and lights to determine whether you are at home.

It also uses geolocation information from your smartphone and those of your household members. (Everyone must have the Alexa app installed, with the location settings enabled for the thermostat).

Alexa routines and scheduling

The Amazon Smart Thermostat also offers a standard scheduling option if you don’t want Amazon controlling your climate randomly. You can use Alexa’s Routines with either setup to have your thermostat perform specific tasks based on the time of day, when a smart device tells it (such as a compatible thermometer or motion sensor) or even your voice. You can access these functions on any smart thermostat compatible with Alexa. However, they are not as affordable as this one.

Use with Amazon Echo Show

The Echo speaker or display allows you to control the thermostat by speaking. If needed, an interactive screen will pop up so that you can easily adjust the settings. You can also control the temperature with your voice.

Amazon thermostat simple installation and wiring

Although the installation of the Amazon Smart Thermostat can be done in a few minutes, it will require that you work with low-voltage wiring. This prospect should concern you.

If this is your first Amazon device, you will need to download and create an Alexa account. To get started, you need to click on Devices at bottom of the home screen and press the plus icon at the upper right corner. Then, select Add Device. Once you have done this, select the thermostat from the list, and chose Amazon as the brand.

You can now follow the instructions in the app to install your thermostat. Or you can skip them if they are not relevant to you. Make sure you shut off the wires which provide power to an existing thermostat and take a photo of the wiring for future reference.

The Alexa app is required for most of the programming and setup of the thermostat. As you would expect from an Amazon device it can be controlled by your voice. It’s not surprising, therefore, that the Alexa voice assistant hasn’t been included in Ecobee’s models. You will need an compatible Alexa device to use voice control.

The smartest and most affordable smart thermostat

The Amazon Smart Thermostat offers great value. It is easy to set up, works seamlessly with Alexa voice-controlled ecosystems, and can calculate your heating bill based upon your usage. It worked flawlessly during our testing.

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat with Voice Control, which costs £200, is our top choice for high-end thermostats. However, it does have a remote sensor and allows you to control third-party apps. We also recommend the £99 Nest Thermostat as a cheaper alternative for Google Assistant users. It supports both Alexa voice commands and Google Assistant voice commands.
