Boiler installation guide to new gas boilers in the UK

Gas boiler installation is never fun. If you are getting a new boiler installed in your home, it is usually because the boiler has broken down.

If this isn’t the case and maybe your boiler is leaking a bit, you may have time to gather some information on whether the installation of a new boiler is a good idea or not then.

If so, this is our guide as to what installing a boiler will involve and what is included in the new boiler cost.

Boiler installation including a new boiler and fitting in the UK

There are thousands of brand new boilers installed every day across the UK. There are currently 29 million homes in the UK, and the Government is building 1.5 million more homes, most of which require a new gas boiler.

Some will have air source heat pumps and solar panels instead, but the majority will be powered by Hydrogen ready combi boilers

Every gas boiler installation in the UK should be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer for your safety.

A Gas Safe registered engineer should have valid and current qualifications to carry out gas work safely. This is evidence that they are competent in working with gas, have had the required training and passed an assessment to qualify.

If someone is not Gas Safe registered while installing your boiler it is not insured.

What is boiler installation and what does it include?

In simple terms, if you currently have a gas boiler, a heating engineer will attend your home, remove your old boiler and replace it with a new one. This will include attaching all the pipework and boiler flue together and getting you back up and running.

If your boiler is staying in the same place and is the same type of boiler, this should be done in under 1 day. If you are moving your boiler or changing the boiler type, it can take up to 2 days to complete.

What are the different types of boiler installations?

Because different homes require different types of boilers due to the change in hot water demands, there are different types of installations too. Here is a breakdown of the different types of installation you can have depending on the type of boiler you have.

New combi boiler installation

If you already have a combi boiler and want another combi boiler and keep it in the same place then this is what is known as a combi boiler replacement or combi swap.

This is one of the easiest and quickest installations and a Gas Safe registered installer’s dream. A combi boiler fires up when you need it giving you instant hot water 24 hours a day.

New System boiler installation

If you need system boiler installation, which is a boiler with a hot water tank, then you can just replace the boiler and not the tank. System boiler installation is better for larger homes with high hot water demands.

This is due to the fact that the hot water cylinder can store lots of hot water ready for use at multiple outlets such as baths and showers at the same time.

Your new system boiler will work with any hot water tank, so if you get a new boiler, the heating engineer can just connect it to your old one.

New conventional boiler installation (regular/heat only)

Conventional boiler installations are becoming less and less common but they are very good for larger homes. If you have a heat-only boiler then you can still replace your old one with a new one.

Conventional boilers require a cold water tank as well as a hot water tank, and a new conventional boiler can be installed to work with your old water tanks.

New boiler with relocation

This applies to all types of gas boiler installations except back boilers. If you already have a boiler but want to move your boiler then you can.

Moving your boiler clearly will take more time, so expect to pay extra for this. But if you do want your boiler moving as part of your installation, you can by all means. You can move your boiler in the same room, or you can even move it to another room if you need to.

System boiler to combi boiler conversion installations

Conversion installations are becoming more and more popular. System boiler to combi boiler installations has drastically increased over the past few years as combi boilers have become more powerful.

Changing from a system boiler to a combi boiler isn’t cheap, but it may save you money in the long run.

There is a whole new conversion kit and big changes need to be maid. The heating engineer however will remove your hot water tank for you making more space.

Why choose to convert from a system boiler and install a combi boiler?

Combi boilers are becoming more powerful and effective at what they do. This means that they can cope with higher hot water demands that system boilers can too, but also can mean they are more energy-efficient, as they only heat up when you tell them to.

System boilers are constantly trying to keep the hot water in a tank warm throughout the day.

How long does it take to install a gas boiler?

How long it takes to install a gas boiler depends on the work required. Here is a short list of how long you can expect each installation to take:

New combi boiler replacement1 day
New system boiler replacement1 day
New regular boiler replacement1 day
New Combi boiler replacement and relocation1-2 days
New system boiler replacement with relocation1-2 days
Regular boiler replacement with relocation1-2 days
System boiler to combi conversion1-2 days
Regular boiler to combi boiler conversion1-2 days

Boiler fitting – what will happen when the installer arrives?

If you need a boiler fitting due to a broken boiler, then this is generally what will happen in a usual day of gas boiler installation:

  • the Gas Safe registered installer should arrive around 8am on the day you have arranged
  • Firstly they will need to assess the site if they haven’t done so previously.
  • The first job is to turn off the gas and electricity to the boiler.
  • They will then remove your old boiler and any fixings not required
  • They will check and flush your system if required.
  • Your new boiler will be installed fixed into place
  • A magnetic filter will be fixed into place too to protect your boiler
  • All pipework will be connected and checked
  • Once fired up and working properly, your new boiler can be checked it is working
  • Gas safety checks will be completed
  • You should sign off any work and the engineer should be clean and tidy afterwards.
  • You then need to register your warranty – Some companies such as Boiler Central will do this for you.

How much is boiler installation?

Most boiler installations vary between £1500 and £3,000. Boiler installation costs vary depending on the man-hours involved, as much of the money you pay towards a new boiler is labour costs.

If you choose to have the simple combi boiler replacement installation then expect installation costs to be lower due to the lower labour. If you choose to have a conversion installation then expect higher labour costs.
