How much do new system boilers cost?
System boilers cost between £1,600 and £3,500 not including the hot water cylinder these boilers require. This does however include boiler installation by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you have high hot water demand a combi boiler may not be able to keep up with you. If you regularly use 2 or more taps or showers at once then you should consider a system boiler. Because a system boiler has a large hot water cylinder with hot water stored ready to go, it can produce a lot of hot water at once.
How much do new regular boilers cost?
Regular or heat only boilers cost between £1,800 and £4,000 including installation, depending on the make and model. This does not include the hot water cylinder or expansion vessel. Similar to system boilers, if you have a home that has multiple bathrooms and 4 or more occupants using hot water at the same time, then a regular boiler may suit your needs the best. If you have a cold water tank in the roof you have a regular boiler. All prices are just for the boiler unit. Any hot water cylinders or tanks will be a separate cost.

Looking for a new boiler? Are you trying to find out the cost of a new boiler, including installation costs?
Great, you’ve come to the right place.
Unfortunately, though, we can’t just say “a new combi boiler will cost you £2,000”, it just doesn’t work like that.
We have to give you the lowest price and the highest price.
This will vary depending on the type of boiler. All we can do is try and give you the best advice and information available on new boiler prices to help you get as close to the likely amount you will have to pay for brand new boiler installations & boiler replacement.
I think it goes without saying, but always buy your boiler new. It just isn’t worth it!
What to look for in boiler replacement costs
When buying a new boiler, just going for the most expensive isn’t always the best idea. But buying the cheapest boiler new isn’t always the best idea either. Beware of big companies too like British Gas who can be a little pricier.
Make sure you find the right new boiler at the right price. Luckily in the United Kingdom, there are fair few boiler brands, heating companies, and manufacturers selling boilers new and all competing for your hard-earned cash.
This all helps in keeping boilers and installation costs down. You’ve probably heard of Worcester Bosch, but there are plenty of others to consider.
German manufacturers Viessmann boilers are just as good and cheaper for a start, so, hopefully, we can help you spend your money wisely and find the perfect boiler for your home at the lowest price to you. Expect your heating and hot water bills to be lower too with a new boiler.
The average cost of a new boiler installation in the UK is £2,000
We can safely say that a boiler unit will cost you between £450 and £2,500. Don’t be confused, though, as this does not include the actual fitting of the unit.
Although the actual price of the heating unit itself will affect how much you pay for your boiler, installing the boiler can be the biggest part of the price.
It all depends on the amount of work that needs to be done by the gas engineer, who must be Gas Safe registered, of course. You will lower your energy bills and carbon emissions with the modern condensing boiler, and you can guarantee there will be boilers in your budget.
Why do new boiler costs vary so much in price?
The cheapest and quickest type of install is a simple replacement or swap for the same type of boiler you currently have, and it is staying in the same place. If this is you, think yourself lucky. it can also vary from company to company, with big companies such as British Gas generally charging higher prices.
You’re saving yourself a few quid on the labour costs before you even get the benefit of a super-economical A-rated boiler saving you money on your heating bills.
If this isn’t you, and you need to change or move your boiler to a new location, then the installation cost of a new boiler replacement will be £200 and £1,500 higher!
How much does it cost to change my boiler type?
Here is a quick overview of some of the extra costs you can expect to pay if you changing a boiler type:
- Combi boiler to Combi boiler – £0
- System boiler to Combi boiler – £400-£1,000
- Regular boiler To System boiler – £400- £600
- Regular Boiler To Combi Boiler – £400-£1,000
- Back Boiler to any new boiler – £600 – £1,500
Is changing changing your boiler worth it?
As you can see changing your boiler type can have a big impact on how much you pay towards your new boiler. If you have good reason though say to make space by removing a system boiler tank then it may be worth it. You also may not need to use all the energy a system boiler uses to keep this tank warm, so a combi boiler may be more efficient!
There are no more new back boilers
Unfortunately if you have a back boiler, you have to convert to a modern boiler, there are considerable costs for this but in the long term you will be saving money on your gas an electricity bills.
New Boiler Installation costs – A breakdown of exactly what you are paying for
Let’s take a look at each type of boiler installation and see what extra costs are involved with each different type of installation. The main outlay is for the boiler unit itself and labour cost, but let’s see exactly where these are incurred.
Gas Safe Registered Engineer Labour Costs
Any gas boiler installation has to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered boiler engineer for your safety and protection. This means that they will be highly trained to meet industry standards and be able to complete all work safely and to legal requirements. Any prices quoted should include any labour. Let’s take a look at the breakdown of what labour your will be paying for in your boiler quote.
Boiler Swaps – Combi boiler to combi boiler installation costs (like for like)
- Cost – £0
A like for like boiler replacement is the cheapest and quickest installation type that you can encounter. It is the same for a system boiler swap or regular boiler (heat only boiler) swap too. You are simply replacing one boiler for another. These are a boiler installers dream and can be completed in less than a day.
Conversion – System boiler to combi boiler costs
- £400 – £1,000
If you currently have a system boiler, a boiler with a tank, then you could convert your boiler to a combi boiler. People do this for a couple of reasons lets take a look at some of the benefits of changing your boiler type:
- Remove hot water tanks from airing cupboards and create extra space
- There has been a decrease in water usage so a combi boiler will be more efficient
If you are wanting to change your boiler type however there is an extra cost. The pipework is different which increases material and labour costs. There is also the actual removal of the tank itself. Changing from a system boiler to a combi boiler could save you money in the long term if it helps to cut your bills by being more efficient and appropriate for your hot water demands
Conversion – Regular Boiler (conventional or heat only boilers) to Combi Boiler costs
- £400 – £1,000
The same applies to conventional boilers. If you want to change for reasons such as a change in hot water demands or to create space then this is an option also. Heat only boilers use a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank, usually in the loft. If you convert to a combi then you can remove both of these tanks.
Back boiler to combi boiler conversion costs
- £1,000 – £3,000
If you have a back boiler you may already be aware that you cant replace it. Therefore you would have to completely convert your central heating system to a modern gas condensing boiler. The best option usually is a combi. The cost to do this is quite high as there is the removal of the back boiler and the complete change of pipework and installation of the new boiler at a different location.
2 to 3 days for a back boiler conversion
It can take 2 days to complete a full back boiler to combi conversion due to the amount of work involved. Most of the money you will spend on this will be labour costs.
How much is a new boiler?
A new boiler will cost from around £1,595, but where is your money going? Whilst the boiler and labour costs are where most of your money will go, there are other parts that you are paying for as part of your boiler quote. These involve things like copper piping, boiler flues, magnetic filters, chemical or power flushes and plume kits. The amount you need and exactly which parts your boiler will use will vary from home to home. Let’s take a look at what each of these is and how much they cost.
New Mains Gas Pipe Upgrades Costs
- £200 – £500
If you are unfortunate enough to have an old boiler with old pipework you may need a brand new mains pipe installing. This pipework would need changing if you have the old 15mm pipework. Therefore the boiler installer or boiler company will have to change this over to the new 21mm copper piping which is required. This obviously adds up in terms of materials and labour costs.
Free mains pipe upgrades
Boiler companies such as Boiler Central don’t add this to the extra cost, it isn’t a question on their ‘Get A Quote’ list and it will not be added on afterwards as all boiler installation prices are fixed!
Boiler Flue Costs
- £0 – £250
There are two main types of boiler flues, horizontal flues and vertical flues. These are essential for your boiler as they are like an exhaust pipe on your car to get rid of any waste gasses and hot water. Let’s take a look at each and see which you may need and how much extra each cost.
Horizontal Boiler Flue
- £0 – £200
Horizontal boiler flues are the most common type of flue and are why most boilers are fitted inside to a wall that has an exterior face. If there isn’t one already, the gas engineer will drill a hole in your wall (which is sealed properly afterwards) for the flue to be placed. These types of flues are easier to install and cheaper to buy. Sometimes they don’t cost a thing.
Vertical Boiler Flue
- £150 – £500
A vertical flue on the other hand is slightly more complicated as they go through the roof of your property. The length of the vertical flue is always longer and the labour costs are higher also due to the extra installation work. They both work exactly the same, and if you can’t have your boiler near an external wall for whatever reason then a vertical flue may be your only option.
Central Heating System & Boiler Flush Costs
- £100 – £500
There are also main types of system flushes that are recommended when you get a new boiler. These are a chemical flush (recommended) and a power flush (better but costly). These ensure that there are no sediments or muck that have built up over time left in your system to break your brand new boiler.
- £80 – £150
These flushes are recommended for all new boiler installations. They ensure that any debris and build-up is cleaned out before it can pass through your new boiler. They also make sure that your radiators get hot evenly as there will be no sediment at the bottom stopping your radiator from working properly. We also highly recommend that you still have a magnetic filter fitted too, which we will mention further down.
A power flush is exactly what you can imagine it to be, a machine that forces hot water around at high pressure to clean your central heating system. These are better than a chemical flush but do come at a cost. They can also cause issues with old central heating systems that can’t cope with extreme water pressure.
Magnetic Boiler Filter Cost
We believe magnetic filters are essential to keeping your boiler going for years and years. Many boiler companies such as Worcester Bosch make you install a magnetic filter to get the full warranty term. For example, a new Worcester Greenstar 4000 standard warranty is 8 years, but to get the full 10 years you must install one of their WB Greenstar Filters.
Thermostats & Heating Controls Costs
- £0 – £200
Everyone who has a boiler will control their central heating with a thermostat. These let you make sure that your home is warm when you want it to be, and your boiler is switched off when no one is in to save money. They have a built-in thermometer to tell you how warm your home is and can regulate your home at a set temperature.
Standard Wireless Thermostat – Free with boiler
If you are getting a brand new boiler you should always expect to get a brand new wireless thermostat for free. These will be the common basic wireless thermostat that you can simply use to turn your heating up and down when you please and use the built-in timer to set your boiler to turn on and off at certain times of the day.
- £99 – £199
Smart thermostats such as Nest and Hive are more common now and are a desirable addition to any home for controlling your boiler and central heating from anywhere that you can get an internet connection. Smart thermostats can save you money in the long run if used properly also. But, if you want to make sure that your home is nice and warm for when you get home on that cold January evening, then they are also a great piece of kit.
Extended warranty costs
Extended warranties vary from boiler to boiler. Some boiler manufacturers offer extended warranties if you pay for extra parts like a magnetic filter. Others offer extended warranties if you get your boiler installed by a manufacturer specific trained gas engineer. Viessmann for example offers 7 years more warranty if your boiler is installed by a Viessmann trained engineer.
New Radiators Cost
If you already have perfectly good radiators in your home that are working properly and not leaking, then you don’t need new radiators. But if you do need new radiators then these can be installed at an extra cost to you. There will be the cost of the radiator or radiators and the extra labour costs for installation.
How much does it cost to move my boiler?
Moving a boiler is also an option for people if they aren’t happy where their current boiler is or if there are modifications being made to the home. Due to the extra labour costs involved it will mean you have to pay more for the boiler installation. Lets take a look at how much extra you will have to pay if you decide to move it.
- Move a boiler within the same room – £250
- Move a boiler to another room or airing cupboard – £400
- Move a boiler into a loft or attic – £600
Keeping the cost of boiler replacement down
As you can see, moving a boiler isn’t cheap. Keeping your boiler in the same place is the easiest and cheapest thing to do. Moving a boiler can also mean that it will take longer for the full installation so it could mean that it takes the gas engineer 2 or 3 days to complete. If you have a back boiler, you will likely have to may to have your boiler moved.
What other types of new boilers are there & how much do they cost?
There are also other types of boilers available such as electric boiler and oil boilers for people who are cut off from the gas network or want an alternative way to heat their homes and hot water.
- £500 – £3,000
Electric boilers have recently become more popular, especially with people who have solar panels or smaller homes. They are extremely efficient as they are pretty much silent and all the electricity used to power the boiler is used to heat the water and pump it around your home.
- £1.500 – £5,000
Oil boilers are also another new boiler option for people who’s homes aren’t part of the national gas network. These boiler are powerful but expensive to buy. They are fuelled by kerosene or paraffin and you have to go to specialist oil companies to get this fuel. It is easy to get but prices vary throughout the year.
- £500 – £10,000
Biomass boilers are boilers that use renewable fuels such as wood pellets & logs. They are basically like a big efficient fire which you put these fuels into. The initial cost is high and the fuel cost isn’t any cheaper than gas but they are more eco friendly.
Best Selling Modern Condensing Gas Boilers & Installation Prices
Take a look at the following table for some estimate boiler prices without installation, and with installation for some of the most popular boilers on the market.
What are the most common new boiler installation costs?
When you get a brand new boiler installed, you will be paying for the unit itself, materials, essential extras, and for a gas or heating engineer to fit everything together.
Included in the boiler replacement installation costs will be materials, such as pipework and fittings. These ensure everything is joined up properly to your taps, radiators, and central heating system.
The essential extras could include a magnetic filter, chemical flush, vertical flue pipes, and thermostats. If you have a boiler already, the labour cost of removing this boiler will also be factored into the price. They should also take this away and scrap it appropriately.
What is the cost to install my new boiler the next day in the UK?
The price is the same. There are no extra installation fees for fitting boilers the same day, never mind the 24 hours.
Next day new boiler replacement costs you the same as it would if you were installing your boiler in a week or two. There should be no premium for this service.
Next day installation is free
If a boiler company tries charging you more for next day installation, then look elsewhere. If you are looking for a new boiler in an emergency, boiler replacement due to boiler breakdown or you can’t do any other day; then you are now in luck.
No More Sales People
You don’t need to waste time on a surveyor coming out to your home trying to sell you boilers at ridiculous costs for commission. You can even get a quote for electric boilers online too.
It just isn’t necessary anymore. New boilers have been known to be installed on the same day, but these are few and far between, but it has happened!
